Lynne was born in Kent in 1957, and
was a literate child and intelligent and responsive school
student in Kent and later at Eynsham, in Oxfordshire. She
graduated from Westfield College London in 1979, took her
MA at University College London, and moved from the English
department to the Theology department at King's College London
for her PhD on the medieval cleric Aelfric (Abbot of Eynsham)
and his interpretation of Augustinian teaching. Her thesis
formed the core of her Books and Grace: Aelfric's Theology,
published in the King's College London Medieval Studies series.
Lynne's teaching career began at Queen Mary and Westfield
London,
and continued at Royal Holloway. She taught Old English in
an inspiring, rigorous and unforgettable way. During this
time (1989 to 1993) she also
held a research appointment in the English department at King's,
working
with Jane Roberts and Christian Kay on the Thesaurus of Old
English, published in book form in 1995 and now available
as a software resource
for students and scholars.
From 1993 Lynne worked in the Centre for Humanities Computing
at King's, and was appointed Lecturer in Humanities Computing
in 1995. Such
a gifted teacher as Lynne was able to bring to this post an
extraordinary combination of scholarship and precision, and
she continued to combine her commitment to realising the potential
of her students with her devotion to AngloSaxon scholarship.
When Lynne first became ill, we all thought that her illness
was the result of overwork and that she would soon recover
and return to her rich and vibrant life. But as her illness
progressed, we became aware that she was dealing with something
much more profound. Throughout her illness, and until the
end of her life, she retained her scholarship, her passion,
and above all her commitment to friendship and her generosity
of spirit.
The Trust seemed to Lynne's family to be an ideal way to commemorate
and continue her untiring and devoted support of her students,
and to keep her name at the heart of the discipline she loved.
It was established as a registered charity in 1998, eight
months after her death, to administer the funds donated at
her funeral and later by her friends, colleagues and family.
We are a very small organisation, run entirely voluntarily,
purely for the purpose of supporting students and scholars
in Lynne's field.
